If you’re shopping for a replacement or upgrade slide, the first question is almost always the same: which generation is my Glock? Glock has made several generations of its pistols, and while they look similar at a glance, slides are designed around the frame, recoil spring assembly and internal parts of their own generation. Getting this right is the difference between a slide that drops right on and one that goes back in the box.
This guide explains how to tell Glock Gen 3, Gen 4 and Gen 5 slides apart, what changed between generations, and how to make sure the slide you buy fits your pistol.
The quick answer: check the slide marking
The fastest way to identify your generation is to look at the side of the slide, next to the model number:
- Gen 4 slides are marked “Gen4”.
- Gen 5 slides are marked “Gen5”.
- Gen 3 slides have no generation marking — just the model and caliber.
If the slide on your pistol isn’t original, look at the frame and the other features below instead.
Glock Gen 3 slides
Gen 3 Glocks were the standard for well over a decade and remain extremely common, which is why Gen 3 OEM slides are still among the most popular parts we sell. Gen 3 pistols are recognizable by:
- Finger grooves on the front of the grip and an accessory rail on the frame
- No generation marking on the slide
- On most full-size and compact models, a single-spring recoil spring assembly (some subcompact models used a dual-spring design)
Many aftermarket and builder frames are designed around Gen 3 parts, so Gen 3 slides are a frequent choice for custom builds. Always check your frame manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before ordering.
Glock Gen 4 slides
Gen 4 introduced changes aimed at shootability and fit. On the frame you’ll find a more aggressive grip texture, interchangeable backstraps and a larger, reversible magazine catch. On the slide side, the biggest practical change for most models is the dual recoil spring assembly.
- “Gen4” marking on the slide
- Dual recoil spring assembly on most models
- Optics-ready MOS versions exist for certain models, such as the Glock 19 Gen 4 MOS slide
Because the recoil spring assembly differs from Gen 3 on many models, you should not assume a Gen 3 and Gen 4 slide are interchangeable — match the slide to your frame and recoil spring assembly.
Glock Gen 5 slides
Gen 5 brought the most visible changes. Gen 5 pistols have no finger grooves, a flared magwell and an ambidextrous slide stop lever. Gen 5 slides typically feature a more rounded front, the nDLC finish, and on many models, front cocking serrations.
- “Gen5” marking on the slide
- Updated internal parts and trigger mechanism compared with earlier generations
- Widely available as optics-ready MOS slides, such as the Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS and Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS
Because of those internal changes, Gen 5 slides are designed to pair with Gen 5 frames. If you have a Gen 5 pistol, start with a slide like the Glock 19 Gen 5 OEM slide or Glock 17 Gen 5 OEM slide.

Can you mix generations?
Some cross-generation combinations can work with the right recoil spring assembly and parts, but they are not guaranteed and depend on the specific model. The safest rule is simple: buy the slide that matches your pistol’s model and generation. If you’re building on an aftermarket frame or want to combine parts from different generations, contact our team first and we’ll confirm what works.
How to choose the right slide
- Confirm your model — Glock 17, 19, 34, 43 and so on. Browse all Glock slides by model.
- Confirm your generation using the marking and features above.
- Decide on stripped or complete — see our guide to stripped vs complete Glock slides.
- Decide on optics — if you plan to run a red dot, read what a Glock MOS slide is.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the generation marked on a Glock?
On Gen 4 and Gen 5 pistols, “Gen4” or “Gen5” is marked on the side of the slide next to the model number. Gen 3 slides have no generation marking.
Will a Gen 5 slide fit a Gen 3 frame?
Gen 5 slides are designed for Gen 5 frames because of changes to the internal parts and trigger mechanism. Match your slide to your frame’s generation, or ask us before mixing parts.
Which generation is best for a custom build?
Many builder and aftermarket frames are designed around Gen 3 parts, which makes Gen 3 slides a common choice. Always follow your frame manufacturer’s compatibility guidance.
